What is spray foam insulation, and how does it work?
Spray foam is liquid polyurethane, mixed and sprayed wet from application equipment directly into an open cavity — an attic rafter bay, a wall stud bay, a rim joist, a crawl space band — where it expands several times its liquid volume and cures into a solid layer within minutes. Unlike loose-fill or batt materials, which are installed as a separate thermal layer, spray foam bonds directly to the framing and sheathing it's applied to.
The distinguishing property is that spray foam air-seals as it insulates. Loose-fill and batt materials slow heat transfer but don't stop air movement through gaps and penetrations on their own — air sealing has to happen as a separate step. Spray foam's expanding, adhering fill closes small gaps and penetrations in the same application that adds thermal resistance.
Two types are in common use: open-cell (lower density, more vapor-permeable) and closed-cell (denser, more rigid, generally more expensive).
