What is hybrid insulation (flash and batt), and how does it work?
Hybrid insulation puts two materials in the same cavity. A layer of closed-cell spray foam goes on first, applied directly against the back of the sheathing, and the rest of the cavity is then filled with fiberglass or mineral wool batt. Contractors call it flash and batt — the foam layer is the flash. The point is to get the air-sealing and vapor-control behavior of closed-cell foam without paying to fill an entire stud bay or rafter bay with it.

Now the arithmetic, which is arithmetic and not a code figure. Closed-cell foam runs about R-6 to R-7 per inch, so R-7.5 takes just over an inch of it. The one-inch flash the method is commonly built with sits under that threshold on a 2x6 wall. That does not make every one-inch assembly non-compliant — an assembly using a Class I or II vapor retarder on the interior is on a different compliance path, and closed-cell foam at sufficient thickness can serve as that retarder itself. It does mean the thickness is not a detail to leave to the spray rig, and that a contractor who has not told you which path the assembly is on has not finished specifying it.
One thing is not in dispute on either path: air leakage moves far more moisture into a building assembly than vapor diffusion does. Whatever the foam thickness ends up being, the air sealing has to be continuous and correct, because that is the larger of the two moisture paths.
